Murder She Wrote! July 1, 2016

"Oh dear, I never realized what a terrible lot of explaining one has to do in a murder!"
~ Agatha Christie ~

There were 7 ladies and 6 gents who attended the Murder Mystery Theater at 2445 S Craycroft Rd, Tucson, on Friday, July 1.

The evening started at 5 pm, with a “Great Race” from the Clubhouse to Five Palms.  The Hasson vehicle was first to arrive at the lovely building – shades of Miami Vice!

The others arrived shortly after, and our fabulous waiter, Nick, made sure we were not thirsty.  The Piano Bar was really enjoyable, and time flew while we chatted.

About 6:45 PM, we were shown to the dining/stage room.  Dinner began with a lovely wedge salad, followed by a great chicken and potato dish.  Dessert was a delicious Cheesecake.

The show was interactive, and the busy performers were also our servers.  Several magic tricks were performed for the audience, followed by a “Who Done It” Murder Mystery.  The performers were funny and talented, especially Miss Trixie.  We are still trying figure “her” out – 6 plus feet tall, and blinged to the max.

An added treat was having our very own Kelly on stage.  Then Ron and Christy competed in a Dress-the-Baby Contest, complete with a baby bottle – so appropriate.  Did they take it home?

It was a fabulously fun evening, and Pam certainly worked very hard to ensure we had the best venue and a wonderful time!

DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun - June 3, 2016

“I want to be notorious rather than famous. Fame has too much responsibility. People forget you are human.” ~ Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia (1909-1982)

June's event was hosted by Susan on Friday, June 3. Eight ladies were able to attend the event which included a trip to The Gallery in the Sun, featuring the artwork of Ted DeGrazia, followed by lunch at Vito and Sclommo's and then dessert at Frost at La Encantada. It was a very full day!

Susie provided lovely parasols and goodie bags, complete with water, for our trek at the Gallery. We were thankful since it was a very HOT day! Susie also arranged for a docent led tour which was very informative as she took us on a tour of the grounds and gallery.

Born in Arizona Territory to Italian immigrant parents, Ettore "Ted" De Grazia had a humble childhood as a copper miner's son which influenced his famous persona later. De Grazia often held forth at his gallery in Tucson's Catalina foothills dressed in a pseudo prospector's getup of scraggly beard, jeans, flannel shirt, boots, and beat-up cowboy hat. Outrageous stories of womanizing, scores of children, and drinking binges created an eclectic image that fueled stories of mythic proportions, along with global sales of his colorful paintings inspired by the Southwest and Mexico. He made millions through his paintings and the licensing of his art for greeting cards and trinkets. Critics called his work kitsch or commercial, yet thousands of admirers continue to love it.

In 1949, DeGrazia bought 10 acres of land in the Santa Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson. At this time there was no electricity, water, or services. All supplies that they needed had to be transported from Tucson. They cooked their food in an old wood-burning stove and took showers outside with water from a bucket.

The DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun was finished being built in 1965, and with the aid of Yaqui and Tohono O'odham friends. This main gallery houses thirteen separate galleries of original artwork.

So attentive to our docent!
In 1952, DeGrazia built the Mission in the Sun as the first building constructed on the property in memory of Padre Eusebio Kino, a Jesuit priest, and dedicated the mission to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Following his own building plans, DeGrazia and his friends carefully handcrafted the adobe constructed building. In 2006, the Mission in the Sun was registered as a National Historic landmark.

“The Mission in the Sun is a place for remembering. A place in which to begin to believe.” ~ DeGrazia

To Russia With Love - May 6, 2016

“There are only two absolutes in life: friends and vodka. And the best times usually involve both” ~ Unknown

May's event, "To Russia with Love", or "Women Who Wodka", was hosted by Daryl on May 6, 2016. The event was a vodka tasting at The Independent Distillery in Tucson. Eleven ladies attended. We started out by parking at Mercado San Agustin off Congress and taking the trolley to 6th and Broadway where we disembarked and looked for a street, okay an alley, called Arizona Ave.

A short walk down the alley is the door to The Independent Distillery.

This is the place!
Once inside, we were charmed by the interior and loved the open access to the inner courtyard nestled between Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market, The Independent Distillery and HighWire Lounge. In fact, some of the ladies disappeared quickly into the market before the tasting even began. Don't get in between a woman and her shopping!

Johnny Gibson's catered our event with a Mediterranean Platter and accompanying sweets. We're tasting vodka, you know. Must have sustenance first!

Ben, the bar manager, conducted our vodka tasting for us. He was a great host for our vodka tasting. Knowledgeable, friendly, attentive and cute to boot!

Below are Ben's prepared notes for how to taste vodka.

What to look for While Tasting:

To appreciate the beauty of vodka, one must drink it straight up in a chimney-style glass and freezer cold, which brings it to its proper viscosity and flavor. There are three senses involved in tasting of vodka: sight, smell and taste.

Appearance: Hold the vodka glass up to the light and look at its clarity, texture and luminescence. Note whether there are any unusual characteristics, such as bluish, yellow or green tints. Fine vodka has a thick and creamy texture when frozen. Also observe the "legs", the trails the spirit leaves as it washes against the inside of the glass.

Aroma or nose: As you swirl the vodka in your glass, smell the vodka. Good vodka will have a creamy, sweet or grainy fragrance. Bad vodka will smell medicinal or agressive with a harsh odor of ethyl spirits.

Taste: Sip the drink gently and examine the taste and any other sensations, such as the characteristic "burn" of alcohol. Let the vodka rest on your palate while exhaling through your nose; swallow and note the aftertaste. Is the sensation sweet or dry, complex or simple? Is the texture oily, chewy or clean? Note whether the flavor and sensation fill the whole mouth or only parts of it.

Consider the aftertaste. Each brand will have a surprisingly unique second life after you swallow or spit. The finish or aftertaste should linger, perhaps for several seconds. Lower-quality vodka will have a short aftertaste. Next, cleanse your palate with spring water and down a sip without letting ti linger in your mouth. Compare the two experiences and their aftertastes.

LtoR - Arizona Grape Vodka, Aylesbury Duck Vodka,
Square One Organic Vodka and Tito's Handmade Vodka
Ben had us taste 4 different brands of vodka:
  1. Tito's Handmade Vodka - Corn
  2. Square One Organic Vodka - Rye
  3. Aylesbury Duck Vodka - White Winter Wheat
  4. Arizona Grape Vodka - Grapes...Grapes? Who knew?!
We all had our favorite vodka, and, of course, began to experiment with olives and such for our own vodka creations!

Once we completed tasting the four vodkas straight, Ben prepared one of the Distillery's signature smashes, a mixture of vodka, simple syrup, thyme and blueberries. Yum-o!

Yes, just look at the smiles on those faces!

After the tasting, we strolled over to Johnny Gibson's to settle the catering bill and shop for a bit. Mike says his pulled pork sandwich was delicious!

A quick trolley ride back to the Mercado and home again we jiggity-jogged.
