Scavenger Hunt - October 4, 2015

Godfrey: Do you mind telling me just what a scavenger hunt is?

Irene: Well, a scavenger hunt is exactly like a treasure hunt, except in a treasure hunt you try to find something you want, and in a scavenger hunt you try to find something that nobody wants.

~ William Powell and Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey

The October 4, 2015 Octoberfest Scavenger Hunt was co-hosted by Connie and Kelly and held at Kelly's house. Andy greeted everyone at the door with a goodie bad filled with beer goggles, beer stein bead necklace and Octoberfest rubber ducks. The day started with some refreshing cold beverages and nibbles followed by instructions, drawings for teams and the uber secret scavenger list.

As each team departed, we were each outfitted with an Octoberfest hat, popcorn snack and water by Andy. Kelly and Connie thankfully mixed up the questions so we didn't follow one another like an episode of the Keystone Cops but we did seem to show up periodically crossing paths!

The scavenger hunt took us far and wide across the community, from the Water Tower to the Front Gate and then whizzing through the Villas, the South Gate and all the facilities. Whew! To answer each question, we had to take a picture as proof that we didn't just hide around the corner and fill in the blanks! This was hard work! We all learned something new. Those trees by the Sales Office? They are Guava Trees! Who knew?! Not anyone on the teams at any rate.

The teams arrived at approximately the same time back at Kelly's house. Wendy, competitive young gal that she is, sprinted to the finish line with Ruth in tow, swooping in to arrive first! There are pictures of Marc getting smooched by the ladies..one of which has been shared!
This author is betting Marc made up this Scavenger Hunt question himself!

Debbie gives Marc a great big smooch.
Rick looks on in shock and awe!
Once the teams returned from the Scavenger Hunt, it was brats and sauerkraut, beans and chips and a few adult beverages all around. We all worked up an appetite during the afternoon so there were plenty of second helpings!

Once Kelly and Connie reviewed the lists and photos, they declared the winners of the Scavenger Hunt!

Tapas Tasting! September 5, 2015

Friends and wine should be old ~ Spanish Proverb

The word "tapas" is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, "to cover". Tapa means "lid" or "cover" in Spanish.

Of the various legends on the origin of tapas many versions involve King Alfonso XIII or King Fernando XVII, while according to one of the oldest restaurants in Spain, El Ventorrillo del Chato, King Fernando VII is the subject of the tale.

No matter which king it really was, all the stories go something like this.

Following a voyage along one of the longest routes in Andalusia, the King arrived at a restaurant where he was served a glass of wine with a slice of cheese over top (some say it was ham or bread). Although the King knew that the slice was being used as a tapadera, a cover to protect the wine from bugs or dust, he ate it anyways, as did his entire court. Following this event it is said that the King continued to ask for "tapas" with his wine everywhere he went.

Other legends claim that the origin of tapas is related an ill King Alfonso X, El Sabio, the Wise, who needed to have small snacks and small amounts of wine in between meals in order to recover. It is said that once the King got back to health, he decided that inns and bars in Castile would always need to serve a snack alongside wine.

Magic mouthfuls by any other name.

The September 5, 2015 Tapas Tasting was hosted by Susie M. in her artfully decorated home. Eight Women Who Wine attended the event. We welcomed three new members to our group - Liz B., Susan, and Liz L. for a total of eleven attendees who enjoyed the afternoon.

After introducing the new members, the event started off with a taste of sparkling cava. From there, members enjoyed the tapas with accompanying wine at each of the six tasting stations.

After enjoying libations, the group retired to the patio to chat about upcoming events.

Spa Day! Friday, August 7, 2015

“I don't think jumping off a cliff is part of a typical spa experience." - Andy”
― H.R. Willaston, Nine Days

Six "Women Who Wine" went to the Hashani Spa at the JW Marriott on Starr Pass on Friday, August 7.  Spa treatments were followed by lunch, complete with sweet potato fries. The staff was gracious and treated our lovely ladies well. Love the champagne! Lunch was followed by more relaxing at poolside in a cabana with treats and goodies. Debbie, our very own version of Steve Irwin, enticed a lizard to join her at the pool. The deer wanted to get in the action too!

A huge thank you and a bouquet of Sweet Potato Fries for our lovely and loquacious Spa Day organizer, Cathy. Couldn't have done it without you!
