War of the Rosés and Poetry Battle - April 5, 2019

Daryl hosted our April 2019 event War of the Rosés and Poetry Battle on Friday, April 5, 1-3 PM.

This is a two-person team event featuring Rosé wines paired with an appetizer of your choice. Your entry must be accompanied by a poem related to your appetizer. Your choice as to bawdy, romantic, dramatic or silly. Just remember you will read it out loud to the group as you present your wine tasting and appetizer for our amusement and pleasure.
Teams were picked at random and each selected a Rosé of their choice to pair with an appetizer and poem. Our teams!
  • Pam & Carole - Gerard Bertrand Cote des roses 2017 / France
  • Connie & Kelly - Mumm Napa Brut Rosé
  • Cathy & Debbie - Rue de Perle Vin Rosé 2016 / France
  • Vicky & Ruth - Rosegraphie Cotes de Provence Rosé / France
  • Daryl & Susie - Meiomi Rosé 2017 - Sonoma
Team Cathy and Debbie submitted their poem fashioned after a familiar Christmas poem.

‘Twas the Night Before Wine

Twas the night before Daryls,
And all through the fridge,
Was a package of dough,
It was only a smidge.

What Shall-ots make
with this smidgen of dough?
It is Thyme to use it,
or away it must go.

Corn we stuff it with ease?
Oh, please, Debbie, please!
With vegetables, too,
Zucchini? Dont tease!

One final touch -
its not asking too much -
The cheese from a goat
Will surely not bloat

When I saw on the stove
The oil all abubble,
We better start cooking
Before we have trouble

Now oil, now shallot,
now corn, and now thyme,
On salt and on pepper
lets finish this rhyme.

When alls said and done,
With Galette in our hands
To Daryls we run

And Rose. Oh, its GRAND!

Team Kelly and Connie paired potato chips and wine, extolling the virtues of potato chips in the following poem!

Potato Chips, Potato Chips

Potato chips, Potato chips
I know you'll add to my hips
Salty, greasy, delicious starch
Soon my tongue you'll surely parch.
I could have healthy crunchy carrots
That would surely win my mother's merits
I could have some cheesy Doritos
My life would be more flavorful with those
But when you're all I want and all I need
Everything else to me is chicken feed
There are many choices of snacks everywhere
But there's nothing quite like you now, is there?
Ruffles, barbeque, and sour cream,
Sea salt, vinegar, pringles and jalapeno,
my how you've multiplied, this isn't a dream!
So, raise your glass and lick your lips
For now this drink and chip will rest on your hips!

Team Vicky & Ruth (those naughty women!) whose appetizer, coincidentally, was pigs in a blanket. Oh my, Willie Nelson!

The Weiner Poem

My nookie days are over
My pilot light is out
What used to be my sex appeal
Is now my water spout

Time was when, on its own accord
From my trousers, it would spring
But now I've got a full-time job
To find the f-ing thing

It used to be embarrassing
The way it would behave
For every single morning
It would stand and watch me shave

Now as old age approaches
It sure gives me the blues
To see it hang its little head
And watch me tie my shoes!

Team Carole & Pam regaled us with "A Drinking Song". Unfortunately, the poem authored by Carole has been lost to the ages!

A Drinking Song

Wine comes in at the mouth
And love comes in at the eye;
That's all we shall know for truth
Before we grow old and die.
I life the glass to my mouth,
I look at you, and I sigh.

Team Daryl and Susie used haiku poetry to extol the virtues of wine and delicious food. Below is a sampling.

Bouquets
Scents of wild flowers
and the sweet taste of rosé
Refreshing bouquets

The Honeyed Morning
The cups of pink wine
Mingling with the morning sun
The bees throng the cups

Backyard Hummingbirds
As I pour more wine
Two hummingbirds sip their own...
Tonight's happy hour
